Starting a day at a new school can be both exciting and daunting for Supply Teachers. There are new faces, unfamiliar routines, and plenty of school-specific policies to get used to—all before they even step into the classroom! At Elevate Supply, we know how important it is to make sure Supply Teachers feel supported and equipped to thrive from the moment they walk through the door.

Schools play a vital role in making this experience as smooth as possible. When Supply Teachers have all the tools, information, and support they need, they can focus on doing what they do best—helping students learn. Let’s take a look at how your school can make that happen.

Schools and Supply Teachers

1. Foster a Supportive School Environment

One of the best things you can do for Supply Teachers is to create a supportive environment. At Elevate Supply, we encourage schools to make Supply Teachers feel like colleagues, rather than just ‘supply.’ This simple shift in mindset can make a world of difference.

A great way to ensure Supply Teachers feel part of the team is to let permanent staff know ahead of time when a Supply Teacher is coming and which classes they’ll be covering. This makes it easier for staff to offer moral support and answer any questions. We also recommend assigning a designated Support Teacher—someone who can be the go-to person for questions throughout the day. This is especially helpful in larger schools where it’s easy to feel lost!

2. Clear Behaviour Management and Flexible Seating Plans

Managing a new class can be tricky, especially when a Supply Teacher is stepping into unfamiliar classroom dynamics. It’s crucial for schools to provide clear behaviour management guidelines, along with details about the seating plan, class rules, and routines. This helps Supply Teachers hit the ground running.

When it comes to seating plans, flexibility is key. Sometimes, the seating arrangement that works well for the regular teacher may not suit the day’s dynamics. Giving Supply Teachers the freedom to make adjustments—like moving students who might be causing distractions—can help them maintain a productive learning environment. If things aren’t working out, having a Support Teacher on hand to offer advice or step in can make all the difference.

3. Outline the Day: Routines, Lunch, and Fire Drills

A clear rundown of the day’s routine can really help a Supply Teacher feel at ease. At Elevate Supply, we suggest providing an easy-to-follow schedule, including break times, lunch routines, and any assemblies or special events. Supply Teachers should know who’s in charge of transitions, where students go during lunch, and what’s expected during those times.

Don’t forget to cover essential details like fire alarms and other emergency procedures. Let the Supply Teacher know what the drill looks like, where to take students, and who to report to. Having this information upfront helps everything run smoothly in the event of an emergency.

4. Supporting SEN, EAL, and SEMH Students

At Elevate Supply, we know that every classroom is diverse, with students who have a range of learning needs. It’s really important for Supply Teachers to be aware of students with SEN (Special Educational Needs), EAL (English as an Additional Language), or SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) challenges.

For example, a student might fidget, which could seem disruptive to someone unfamiliar with them—but that fidgeting could actually be a coping strategy for an SEN student. Letting the Supply Teacher know this beforehand can prevent misunderstandings and help create an inclusive classroom environment. Providing a summary of key student information—such as specific SEN strategies, classroom rules, or even seating preferences—makes a huge difference. Make sure your Supply Kit includes information on who to contact for additional support with behaviour or SEN students, and how best to reach them during lessons.

5. Supply Kit Essentials and School Map

Having a Supply Kit ready is a fantastic way to support Supply Teachers. The basics like pens, lesson plans, and photocopier codes are a must, but don’t stop there! Equip them with:

Remember, a Supply Kit should be more than just a folder handed over at reception—it’s about giving them the confidence to navigate the day successfully. Take a few moments to walk them through the kit and answer any questions. Supply Teachers will appreciate the effort, and it sets them up for success!

6. Getting Support if Things Aren’t Working Out

Sometimes, things might not go exactly as planned, and that’s okay! Knowing where to go for support can be a lifesaver. Encourage Supply Teachers to ask for help when needed, whether it’s with behaviour management, SEN support, or something as simple as locating a classroom. Make sure they know the best way to get help during lessons—whether that’s sending a student to fetch a Support Teacher or using an internal phone system.

7. Working with Elevate Supply

At Elevate Supply, we believe that collaboration is key to ensuring a successful day for both Supply Teachers and schools. We specialise in providing high-quality Supply Teachers for short-term, long-term, or emergency cover, whether for primary or secondary settings.
